Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The bulk of these records consists of the correspondence recieved by the first four presidents of the Wisconsin Synod. The following men held the position and were elected pro-tempore:

Johannes Muehlhaeuser December 1849-June 1860

Johannes Bading June 1860-August 1863

Gotlieb Reim September 1863-June 1865

Wilhelm Striessguth June 1865 - June 1867

Johannes Bading June 1867 -June 1889.

The collection also consists of correspondence collected by from various personal collections as noted in Koehler's custodial history.

Koehler's Index: 727. 1863, August 27, sent from Berlin by Eichler to Bading. Hilft Bading in sein Kollekt. Prinz Fr. Karl hat Bading bei sen Vater empfohlen, aber selbst noch nicht beigesteuert. Fachtmann soll nur für Wisconsin sorgen. Dorner will Stipendien für Studenten in Europa, die später nach Amerika gehen. Langenberger zu eilig im Zurückziehen ihrer Unterstützung. Muehlhaeuser hat recht mit den lutherischen Hörnern, und Badings Ärger darüber ohne Grund. Moldehnke soll vorsichtiger sein in der Aufnahme von Studenten.

(Helps Bading into his collection. Prince Fr. Karl recommended Bading to his father, but has not yet contributed. Fachtmann is only supposed to take care of Wisconsin. Dorner wants scholarships for students in Europe who will later go to America. Langenberger too hasty in withdrawing support. Muehlhaeuser is right about the Lutheran horns, and Bading's anger about it is unfounded. Moldehnke is said to be more careful in accepting students.)
