From the Collection: The bulk of these records consists of the correspondence recieved by the first four presidents of the Wisconsin Synod. The following men held the position and were elected pro-tempore:

Johannes Muehlhaeuser December 1849-June 1860

Johannes Bading June 1860-August 1863

Gotlieb Reim September 1863-June 1865

Wilhelm Striessguth June 1865 - June 1867

Johannes Bading June 1867 -June 1889.

The collection also consists of correspondence collected by from various personal collections as noted in Koehler's custodial history.

Koehler's Index: 970. 1864, September 7, sent from Milwaukee by Dammann to Reim. Zu Port Washington war der Pennsylvanier Benze vorgeschlagen durch dem zeitweiligen Bischof Dammann. Drei Bewerber: Gausewitz, Kilian, Braun. Die Reihenfolge musste innegehalten werden. Braun trägt sich vor. Sehr nachteilige Urteil über Braun. Gausewitz ist gewählt und die Gemeinde ist für bessere Liturgie zu haben. Leise Mahnung für d. Präses bezüglich der Synodalpolitik und die Umtriebe bei Versorgung der Gemeinden und Pastoren. (zwei Blätter)

(At Port Washington the Pennsylvanian Benze was proposed by the temporary Bishop Dammann. Three applicants: Gausewitz, Kilian, Braun. The order had to be maintained. Brown introduces himself. Very unfavorable verdict on Braun. Gausewitz is elected and the congregation is open to better liturgy. Gentle reminder for d. President regarding the synodal policy and the activities involved in supplying the congregations and pastors. (two sheets))
