Handwritten letter in German from Martin Stephan in Oshkosh, WI to Muehlhaeuser.

Koehler's Index: 149. 1857, April ?, sent from Oshkosh by Mart. Stephan to Muehlhaeuser. Hat früher bei Princeton gepredigt und Kirchenzucht geübt. Ist dann nach Michigan verzogen. Inzwischen haben beide Teile der Gemeinde Prediger von Muehlhaeuser erbeten. Stephan trägt um auf Teilung an, beteuert seine gute Gesinnung, kann aber die steife ablehnende Art der Missourier nicht verbergen und erregt so das von Reim angemerkte Urteil.

(Used to preach at Princeton and practice church discipline. Then moved to Michigan. In the meantime, both parts of the congregation have requested preachers from Muehlhaeuser. Stephan argues for division, asserts his good disposition, but cannot hide the stiffly rejecting nature of the Missouriers and thus arouses the verdict noted by Reim.)
