He moved to Watertown, Wisconsin in 1929 when his father was called as pastor of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, and was confirmed there in 1936. He attended Northwestern Preparatory School, Northwestern College and Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary graduating in 1947. He served as an instructor for one year each at Bethany Lutheran College and Michigan Lutheran Seminary. Pastor Eggert was married on June 27, 1948 to the former Ruth Westcott in Watertown, Wisconsin.
His first parish was at St. Paul’s in Valley City, North Dakota. In 1950 he was called as pastor to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Farmington, Wisconsin, serving there until 1955 when he was installed as pastor of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. During his pastorate the congregation opened a Christian day school. In 1966 he joined the faculty of Wisconsin Lutheran College as head of the music department and choir director. When the synod closed WLC in 1970 he accepted the call as the associate pastor of Atonement Lutheran Church. In 1984 he was called to serve as project director for the new/revised WELS hymnal. For Atonement’s 60th anniversary, Pastor Eggert’s knowledge and insight guided the congregation in the purchase of a new pipe organ. He also served as choir director at all of the congregations where he was the pastor.
Over the years Pastor Eggert served the synod on various boards and committees including the Board for Parish Education, the Commission on Worship, and as chairman of the Commission on Higher Education and member of the Coordinating Council.
His musical background included study at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and Concordia College, River Forest, Illinois. For 36 years he was director of The Lutheran Chorale of Milwaukee and served for 33 years as director of Lutheran Guideposts, a Milwaukee TV program. Throughout his ministry he was active in promoting clinics and workshops in church music and worship, and edited “Viva Vox” and “Focus on Worship,” a publication of the Commission on Worship for pastors and church musicians.
