Biographical / Historical

In the 1970’s the members of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod decided to publish a hymnal to replace The Lutheran Hymnal, which has been in use in its congregations for some time. This hymnal was intended to reflect the changing nature of the synod, the American nation in which most of the synod’s congregations were located, and the English language, with due respect to the traditions of the ancient Church, Lutheran liturgical practices and hymnody, and most of all to the doctrines of Scripture. Committee members were nominated Synod-wide, then selected by those heading up the project. Numerous hymnals, liturgies, and hymns were reviewed by the committees, and talented musicians, writers, and pastors were given opportunities to submit material. New liturgies and hymn settings were tested on congregations through the distribution of “samplers,” and the resulting feedback was carefully reviewed and applied to the developing hymnal. The result was, in 1993, the publishing of the Wisconsin Synod’s first hymnal, Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal.
