From the Collection: The bulk of these records consists of the correspondence recieved by the first four presidents of the Wisconsin Synod. The following men held the position and were elected pro-tempore:

Johannes Muehlhaeuser December 1849-June 1860

Johannes Bading June 1860-August 1863

Gotlieb Reim September 1863-June 1865

Wilhelm Striessguth June 1865 - June 1867

Johannes Bading June 1867 -June 1889.

The collection also consists of correspondence collected by from various personal collections as noted in Koehler's custodial history.

Koehler's Index: 665. 1863, January 4, sent from Portage City by Ad. Fr. Meyer to Bading. Ist am 11 December in Portage angekommen. Konnte kein Lodging ausser in Wirtshaus finden. Ging in die Buschgemeinde. Lewiston wurde freundlich aufgegangen. In Portage war der Iowaer Rohrlach. Nur wenig Gemeindeglieder. Jetzt nehmen die Methodisten schon ab, und die beiden Gemeinden blicken.

(Arrived in Portage on December 11th. Couldn't find any lodging except in tavern. Went to bush church. Lewiston was kindly raised. In Portage was the Iowaer Rohrlach. Few church members. Now the Methodists are already picking up and the two churches are looking.)
