From the Collection: The bulk of these records consists of the correspondence recieved by the first four presidents of the Wisconsin Synod. The following men held the position and were elected pro-tempore:

Johannes Muehlhaeuser December 1849-June 1860

Johannes Bading June 1860-August 1863

Gotlieb Reim September 1863-June 1865

Wilhelm Striessguth June 1865 - June 1867

Johannes Bading June 1867 -June 1889.

The collection also consists of correspondence collected by from various personal collections as noted in Koehler's custodial history.

Koehler's Index: 804. 1863, December 30, sent from Milwaukee by Muehlhaeuser to Bading. Wenn wir stricht lutherisch sein wollen, dann sollen wir die unierten Gemeinden wageschoren sein lassen. Aus der unierten Kreisen sind wir hervorgegangen. Die haben uns geholfen, wir können auf den Rat des Oberkirchenrat eingehen. Wer strickter sein will kann nach Missouri gehen, oder denen die Stange halten.

(If we want to be strictly Lutheran, then we should let the Uniate congregations be sworn. We emerged from the Uniate circles. They helped us, we can respond to the advice of the Oberkirchenrat. If you want to be more knit, you can go to Missouri, or stick with them.)
