Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The bulk of these records consists of the correspondence recieved by the first four presidents of the Wisconsin Synod. The following men held the position and were elected pro-tempore:

Johannes Muehlhaeuser December 1849-June 1860

Johannes Bading June 1860-August 1863

Gotlieb Reim September 1863-June 1865

Wilhelm Striessguth June 1865 - June 1867

Johannes Bading June 1867 -June 1889.

The collection also consists of correspondence collected by from various personal collections as noted in Koehler's custodial history.

Koehler's Index: 917. 1864, June 9, sent from Berlin by Bading to Reim. Will später nach Basel und Württemberg. Hat jetzt 9250 Thaler. In Deutschland nicht viel zu holen. Nach Russland, Holland und England mag er nicht wegen Familienverhältnissen. Hofft auf Mecklenburg Landeskollekte. Lannige Bemerkung über sein Nichtwiederwahl. Hoffentlich kommen Köhler und Consorten von dem schiefen Bahn ab. (Koehler, History of Wisconsin Synod, p. 99)

(Will later go to Basel and Württemberg. Now has 9250 thalers. Not much to get in Germany. He doesn't like to go to Russia, Holland and England because of family relationships. Hoping for a Mecklenburg state collection. Lannige remark about not being re-elected. Hopefully Köhler and company will get off the wrong track.) Letter appears in Koehler's book.
