From the Collection: The bulk of these records consists of the correspondence recieved by the first four presidents of the Wisconsin Synod. The following men held the position and were elected pro-tempore:

Johannes Muehlhaeuser December 1849-June 1860

Johannes Bading June 1860-August 1863

Gotlieb Reim September 1863-June 1865

Wilhelm Striessguth June 1865 - June 1867

Johannes Bading June 1867 -June 1889.

The collection also consists of correspondence collected by from various personal collections as noted in Koehler's custodial history.

Koehler's Index: 592. 1862, March 23, sent from Berlin by Eichler to Muehlhaeuser. Wünscht jährlich wenigstens zwei Berichte über amerikanische kirchliche Verhältnisse. Verspricht Sendung eines tüchtigen Theologen und eines älteren Lehrers, des Schwiegervaters von Schönfeld (Stadtmissionars in Milwaukee). Sendet 30 Thaler von Fürsten Reuss in Oesterreich gestiftet für Austeilung von Neuen Testamenten. Frage, ob und weshalb die Wisconsin Synode sich nicht der Generalsynode anschliessen kann.

(Would like at least two reports per year on American ecclesiastical conditions. Promises sending of an able theologian and an elderly teacher, von Schönfeld's father-in-law (City Missionary in Milwaukee). Sends 30 thalers donated by Prince Reuss in Austria for distribution of New Testaments. Question whether and why the Wisconsin Synod cannot join the General Synod.)
