Biographical / Historical
District mission boards perform very important functions within the structure of the Board for Home Missions (BHM) of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). Their tasks include uncovering areas with mission potential, conducting demographic studies on areas identified with promising potential, meeting with lay leaders to identify the viability of core groups of lay people, calling and training new home missionaries for new and existing home missions, and monitoring and guiding all congregations that receive mission subsidy from the WELS.
The district mission boards also serve as mediators between congregations and the BHM. All requests for subsidy or manpower must first pass through the local district mission board. The district mission board than prioritizes the requests from its district and presents its recommendations to the BHM for funding. This is an important task. District mission boards not only decide where to begin new exploratory missions, but they are also charged with determining when to cut funding and close existing missions.
The Southeastern Wisconsin District Mission Board (SEW DMB) is responsible for mission activity in southeastern Wisconsin, eastern Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky. During the period covered in this collection—1977-1996—its efforts primarily focused on expanding mission work in the rapidly growing suburbs of Chicago, IL, and Indianapolis, IN. The minutes from meetings of the SEW DMB reveal both the joy and the heartache that went into the difficult decisions of starting new missions and cutting funding to others.
